Acne is often a problematic skin condition to treat, more so if it keeps flaring up. If you are sticking faithfully to your treatment regime, but your acne is getting worse, you might be committing one or a few of these mistakes:

  1. You’re switching your treatments too often

Just like skin rash treatment, you have to give your acne treatment time to take into effect. If you’re not seeing any results in two weeks, resist the urge to move on to the next option. Doing this can irritate your skin and make your acne even worse. Instead, give the treatment ample time to work, around 6 to 8 weeks or so, before trying another product.

  1. Your phone is dirty

Your phone is the one thing that is almost always in your hands. Hence, it is also one of the dirtiest items that you can touch. And when you put it to your face or touch your face after using it, the dirt from the phone can quickly transfer to your skin.

Make it a habit to sanitize your phone every day. Moreover, use a Bluetooth headset or your earphones to take a call to avoid putting the phone against your face.

  1. You’re eating the wrong food

The food we eat can affect everything in our body, including our skin conditions. Avoid foods that are known to aggravate acne, such as dairy products, refined grains, sugars, chocolate, fast food, and foods abundant in omega-6.

  1. You’re using the wrong beauty products

Avoid using makeup, skincare products, and hair products that contain ingredients that can make acne worse. Choose beauty products that are non-comedogenic or specially made for sensitive skin. Similarly, make it a habit to clean your makeup and beauty tools regularly to avoid transferring bacteria to your skin.

  1. You’re washing your face too hard and too frequently

Washing your face too often and too hard is counterintuitive to preventing acne breakouts. Doing this can dry out and irritate your face, which can lead to your acne getting worse. Instead, wash your face only twice a day and avoid using too much pressure on your skin when you do so. Moreover, limit your use of exfoliating products to once a week at most. Using them too much can irritate and inflame your skin.

  1. You’re wiping your face with dirty towels

Don’t use the same towel for your face and body. Use a new washcloth every time you wash your face to avoid spreading bacteria on your skin.

  1. You’re too stressed

Stress can not only make your acne worse, but it can also slow down its healing time. That said, managing stress is an excellent way to reduce your acne flare-ups. You can do this by avoiding the causes of stress as much as you can, getting enough rest, and practicing meditation.

Acne, whether mild or severe, can already be tricky to treat. Don’t make it worse by making these mistakes.

However, if you can’t pinpoint what’s making your acne worse, it’s recommended that you consult with a dermatologist to determine another possible underlying cause.
