Hearing is one of the senses of particular importance for proper functioning in society. Even the slightest dysfunction can hinder interpersonal communication, which is essential in everyday life. Unfortunately, hearing loss is very common in both adults and toddlers – what are the causes?

Congenital and acquired hearing disorders

One of the most important distinctions of hearing disorders is at what stage in our lives it appeared. Hearing loss and deafness can be diagnosed right after the birth of a child, which is classified as congenital hearing impairment. Still, hearing disorders can also appear in adulthood, regardless of age, and then it is called acquired hearing impairment. Every newborn baby undergoes a hearing test to rule out possible dysfunctions, and every adult can do an online hearing test not only when they start to experience some dysfunctions of hearing but also to check its condition – early detection in most cases, can make the hearing loss treatable.

The causes of congenital hearing impairment

Several factors can determine whether a young baby is born with a hearing loss or almost deafness. First of all, a congenital defect may result from a serological conflict of the parents and also arise as a result of the mother taking certain medications that may cause an ototoxic effect detrimental to the development of hearing in the unborn child. These medications include certain types of antibiotics as well as aspirin. The cause may also be diseases that a woman experiences during pregnancy, such as rubella, toxoplasmosis, or syphilis. Hearing loss can also occur as a result of mechanical injuries when the mother is pregnant and as a result of hypoxia during childbirth.

Causes of acquired hearing impairment

Acquired hearing defects may appear at any stage of our lives. Therefore, even the slightest dysfunction should induce us to perform a hearing test. Unfortunately, the most common cause is age – with age, our hearing may deteriorate, and we hear less of quiet sounds or sounds of higher frequency. Of course, this is a gradual process, and hearing loss is not sudden, which is why regular hearing tests that detect the first abnormalities are so important.

Acquired hearing loss can also be the result of frequent exposure to loud noise. This applies mainly to people who deal with loud noises on a daily basis, mainly at work, e.g., in large production plants, as well as teachers and musicians. It can also be caused by listening to music at home too loudly or using inappropriate headphones.

Hearing loss can be caused by mechanical injuries, e.g., as a result of improper use of cotton buds, past and untreated viral and bacterial diseases, otitis, as well as serious civilization diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and others. Therefore, you need to take care of your hearing and perform a hearing test prophylactically.
