Surgery isn’t always the answer to weight loss problems. There are safer and more effective ways to lose weight and keep it off.

With over two thirds of British adults classed as overweight or obese, it’s safe to say that many of us struggle to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. And this is having a negative impact on our health – both physically, by increasing the risk of serious health conditions such as stroke, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and mentally by decreasing self-confidence and raising the risk of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

You may well be bored of hearing it, but there’s a reason why weight loss and nutrition experts recommend taking regular exercise and following a balanced diet – and that’s because it actually works.

Exercising regularly helps to speed up your metabolism, burn calories and build lean muscle, all of which help to give a significant boost to your weight loss efforts. For best results, exercise for at least 150 minutes a week and try to follow a routine that combines cardio, strength and stretching-based exercises.

Similarly, following a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrains and lean protein, will help you to lose weight while also improving your overall health. But avoid strict calorie counting and totally depriving yourself of your favourite foods, as that will make you much more likely to fail. Instead opt for smaller portions, healthy choices and, of course, the odd treat.
